DETAILS
Our 'Ballet for Children' for 2022 is David BINTLEY's 'Still Life' at the Penguin Café. Set to the disarming avant-pop music of the Penguin Café Orchestra, a world music ensemble that was a sensation in the 1980s, and performed by dancers in charming animal masks, this work has an underlying message about modern environmental issues and is a scathing criticism of the state of our civilisation.
- [Part I] Pre-show Talk
"Let's think together! How can we save the disappearing creatures?"
Simultaneous English interpretation service will be available on specific dates.
See here for details.
This performance will be preceded by a 20-minute pre-show talk about endangered animals and related topics, with the aim of encouraging people to think about the themes of the piece and, by extension, environmental issues, from the following perspectives.
Q Are those popular animals at the zoos endangered?
Q What happens when certain creatures become extinct?
Q What can we do to save these disappearing creatures?
NARUSHIMA Etsuo
Guest Commentator: NARUSHIMA Etsuo (veterinarian, former director of Inokashira Park Zoo)
Moderator: ISHIYAMA Chie (freelance newscaster)
- [Part 2] Performance of Penguin Café
This is a very stylish production choreographed by Sir David BINTLEY. Accompanied by lively music, penguins dressed as waiters, rats, sheep, zebras, and other animals start dancing one after another. However, the animals performing this joyful dance are actually all extinct or endangered creatures.
[Covid-19] Our Prevention Plan and Request to Our Patrons
The performances will be taking place based on the policies of the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan government, along with the guideline for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 infection by the Association of Public Theatres and Halls in Japan.
Please read this page before visiting the theatre.
