Ballet: David Bintley's Aladdin
Viewing Period: 21 Sep. 2024 2:00 - 20 Mar. 2025 20:00 JST
Recorded on 23 June 2024
David Bintley's Aladdin is a full-length ballet choreographed by former Artistic Director Sir David Bintley for the National Ballet of Japan, New National Theatre Tokyo in 2008. Since its premiere, this production has been beloved by audiences. Seamlessly blending entertainment and artistry, this acclaimed work has been performed by esteemed companies such as the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Houston Ballet, earning international recognition as one of David Bintley's signature pieces. In addition to the intricate choreography, highlights include Carl Davis's accessible music and the enchanting scenes including the flying carpet and the emergence of the Djinn from the lamp. While it is widely recognized in Japan as an Arabian story, the tale of Aladdin in 'Arabian Nights' is set in China. This production depicts Aladdin as a Chinese descendant in Old Arabia and beautifully incorporates Chinese elements including Lion and Dragon dances with Arabian settings. Audiences can revel in the grand ballet experience with diverse, character-rich dances, including the Pas de deux of Aladdin and the Princess, the divertissements of jewels in the cave scene, and the energetic performances of the Djinn and his entourage.

Opera: La Cenerentola
Viewing Period: 31 Jan. 2025 12:00 - 14 Mar. 2025 12:00 JST
Recorded on 3 October 2021
The bel canto opera masterpiece, "La Cenerentola" is one of the most admired pieces by the Italian greatest composer Gioachino Rossini, and is an opera version of the familiar Cinderella story, presented in a new production as the opening performance of the New National Theatre Tokyo's 2021/2022 season. This masterpiece is brimming with all the appeal of the composer, from the delightful ensembles and the richly ornate arias to the swelling climax with agilita.
The production, directed by Jun Aguni, garnered significant attention for its unique interpretation of Cinderella, set in a 1950s-60s film studio inspired by Rome's Cinecittà during the golden age of Italian cinema. From the overture, the production captivated the audience, immersing them in the glamorous world of classic film studios and maintaining their excitement with vibrant, ever-changing stage designs.
The title role of Angelina was performed by Aya Wakizono, an Italy-based artist whose talent continues to flourish with time. She mesmerized the audience with her refined technique and expressive performance. Wakizono is set to appear in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the NNTT in May-June, further showcasing her artistry.
Don Ramiro was portrayed by the gifted Rossini specialist René Barbera, whose voice dazzled with brilliance and lyrical elegance, perfectly complementing Wakizono. Barbera received high praise for his performance in Guillaume Tell at the NNTT this past November.
The legendary Italian star Alessandro Corbelli, in the role of Cenerentola's stepfather Don Magnifico, delivered a crowd-pleasing performance. Conductor Masahiro Joya received enthusiastic applause for his skillful direction, showcasing the singers' virtuosity and maintaining a dynamic tempo throughout the opera.
