NNT Drama Studio "En la ardiente oscuridad (In the Burning Darkness)"

NNT Drama Studio was established in April 2005 with the objective of training the next generation of theatre actors.The Studio is led by a faculty of experts in theatrical education and prominent theatre makers from inside and outside of Japan.

Following the reading performance of "Himeyuri" in August, the students who entered in 2020 will now perform "En la ardiente oscuridad (In the Burning Darkness)" written by Antonio Buero VALLEJO, one of the most significant Spanish dramatists in the 20th century. This work from an early stage in his career was highly acclaimed when it was premiered in 1950.

The story takes place at a school for the blind. Under the policy of the schoolmaster and his wife, the students live peacefully while accepting their inconvenience. Then a new student, Ignacio, arrives. He despairs of being blind and has an intense longing to be able to see. His rebellious attitude affects the students around him and destabilises the values in the school.

TANAKA Maiko directs this production of a work that can be seen as a rebellion against the oppressive Franco regime of the mid-20th century.
