Bubbling and Boiling

Kotsu-kotsu means "step-by-step" in Japanese, and the Kotsu-Kotsu Project involves rehearsing over the course of a year. Each time, the director, artistic director and theatre staff engage in exhaustive dialogue and communication about the direction the work should move in, whether that direction is appropriate and what the foreseeable potentialities are in that direction. The aim is to have a rehearsal period unimpeded by time constraints and to allow all creators to share their concerns, thus enabling greater comprehension of the work and producing a performance that conveys the richness of the theatre to as much of the audience as possible.

The first period was held from March 2019 to March 2020. Director NISHIZAWA Eiji was drawn to "Bubbling and Boiling" by BETSUYAKU Minoru. The play is from BETSUYAKU's "Middle Class Commoner" series project, which he embarked on in the new Reiwa era as an opportunity to look back on the nameless people of the previous Showa era and portray how they lived their lives. NISHIZAWA wanted to explore Japanese self-identity at the level of the ordinary citizen. To this end he examines the activities of the middle-class commoners, arguably an endangered species in the modern era of self-projection and seeking social approval online. This production is a fresh embodiment of BETSUYAKU Minoru's work for a new generation.

The performances will be taking place based on the policies of the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan government, along with the guideline for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 infection by the Association of Public Theatres and Halls in Japan.
