The Antipodes

The series programme for OGAWA Eriko's fourth year as Artistic Director of Drama is "Voices Stories exploring discussion, criticism, dialogue, and so on". For modern humans, who avoid face-to-face contact and arm themselves with tools for communication through words alone, many interactions with words are simply monologues projected in one direction or the other. Sometimes these words cannot even pass for a coherent argument with reasonable logic. A discussion cannot be established simply by hammering out arguments taken to their extreme. At times, the purpose is simply to hurt the other party.

The Antipodes by Pulitzer Prize winner Annie BAKER is the first in this series on this theme of stopping and re-examining the words we convey to others and our relationships with others. The title of the play means "the other side of the world". The play portrays a group of eight people putting together stories in a closed off room. Directed by OGAWA Eriko herself, the work questions, together with the audience, what "stories" are worth to a world in crisis.

The performances will be taking place based on the policies of the Japanese government and the Tokyo Metropolitan government, along with the guideline for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19 infection by the Association of Public Theatres and Halls in Japan.
