DETAILS
As the third pairing in our double bill series, our 2023/2024 season will open with Puccini's Suor Angelica and Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges. Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica) is the second work in Il trittico, a collection of three one-act operas from Puccini's later years. Performed with only female singers except for the mixed chorus in the final scene, this work captures a remarkably religious and lyrical atmosphere. For approximately 50 minutes, peaceful scenes of the convent nuns, the tense interaction between Angelica and her aunt, the Princess, that dramatically turns into tragedy, and scenes of mysterious miracles, all develop through Puccini's distinctively eloquent orchestration.
Called a "Lyric Fantasy" by the composer, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (The Child and the Spells) by Ravel is a fantasy merging elements of both opera and ballet. The story develops from a child's perspective, and can be enjoyed as a fable for children and adults alike. It is also appealing as a spectacular orchestral work showcasing Ravel's unique, modern harmonies and rhythms.
Aguni Jun, one of the finest opera directors in Japan, and the conductor Numajiri Ryusuke, renowned for his particular talent for modern works, work again together here as they did for Eine florentinische Tragödie & Gianni Schicchi. Enjoy the unique contrasts of this double bill. The role of Angelica will be performed by Chiara Issoton, who has risen to stardom with dramatic roles such as Tosca, among others, making her return to the NNTT having sung Tosca in 2021.

SYNOPSIS
"Suor Angelica"
The sun is setting outside the convent. Nuns who have completed their prayers gossip about how Angelica is waiting to meet a visitor. Her visitor finally appears. It is Angelica’s aunt, the Princess (La zia principessa). Because Angelica’s sister will marry, Angelica must renounce any inheritance from her parents in favour of her sister. The Princess has come to arrange these inheritance details. Angelica is an unwed mother, and for that reason she was sent to the convent seven years earlier and separated from her son. When Angelica, seeming happy for her sister, asks about her own son, the Princess reveals that the child died two years earlier. Angelica is overcome with sorrow. Late at night, Angelica secretly brews herbs into a poison that will let her be together with her son. But as soon as she commits the cardinal sin of suicide, she realizes she will be unable to enter heaven and falls into despair. Praying to the Virgin Mary for forgiveness, Angelica experiences a miracle. Amidst the songs of angels, Angelica is brought to her son.
"L'Enfant et les Sortilèges"
A young boy (L’Enfant) gripes and complains about having to do homework. His angry mother (Maman) puts out tasteless bread and bitter tea as snacks for him. The boy has a tantrum and begins misbehaving—breaking the teapot and cup, tormenting a squirrel and a cat, rummaging through the fireplace, flipping over the kettle, writing on the walls, breaking the clock and tearing up books. And then, a chair moves. Saying “I won’t stand for this hooligan boy”, it begins to dance. The clock is angry, too, the teapots and cups threaten the boy and even the fire chases after him saying “Let’s burn the terrible boy”. The shepherd scrawled over the wall, a princess from a torn-up book of story tales and a math problem from a textbook—now transformed into a strange old man—all appear in front of the boy. When the boy goes out into the garden for a reprieve, the tree in the garden startles him and wail that “These are the scars you left on us”. The dragonfly, the bat, the frog and all the animals the boys had tormented gather together. The boy instinctively calls out “Maman” for his mother. The animals turn on him and attack him. When the boy picks up an injured squirrel, the animals notice the boy’s gentle side. They help the unconscious boy by bringing him back to the house and calling out “Maman”, saying “He became a good boy”, and vanishing. Under the moonlight, the boy wakes up and calls out “Maman”.
