DETAILS
One of the most renowned works from famous British composer Benjamin Britten. Set in a fishing village on the east coast of England, this is the story of a lonely fisherman, Peter Grimes, suspected of killing his young apprentice. It offers an intensely emotional depiction of isolation and group mentalities, hope and despair.
Director Robert Carsen received great acclaim for highlighting Grimes's instincts and the violence of escalating group mentalities when this production premiered at Teatro alla Scala in October 2023. We are pleased to welcome globally renowned tenor Brandon Jovanovich , who also sang in Milan, in the title role, as well as extraordinary singers Sally Matthews and Jordan Shanahan. This production is conducted by Kazushi Ono and features the New National Theatre Chorus, who shine as another leading role in the performance.
SYNOPSIS
Set in 1830 in a fishing village in eastern England facing the North Sea. Suspected of letting his young apprentice die in a storm, fisherman Peter Grimes is tried in court. Grimes pleads his innocence, arguing that the accident occurred by chance. But unconvinced and not close to Grimes, the villagers view him with suspicion. Grimes is introduced to a new apprentice by Ellen, a local teacher who has won Grimes’s affection, but this new apprentice also perishes in an unfortunate accident. In the village, the search begins for the missing boy, and suspicions grow. Although sympathetic to Grimes, Captain Balstrode can’t save him from these fateful circumstances. In the end, Grimes sets out on the sea alone.
