DETAILS
Performing a new production of ardent Shakespeare-devotee Verdi's early-period iconic opera, Macbeth. A commemorative work that breaks new ground as a dramatic opera and features sinister music full of dramatic suspense, this stately opera depicts the psychology of Lord and Lady Macbeth--pushing the ambition, suspicion, scheming and confusion arising from a fateful prophecy to their ultimate limits.
Directed by Lorenzo Mariani, an undisputed Italian opera authority, and conducted by Carlo Rizzi, one of the most respected figures in the world of Italian opera. Macbeth is portrayed by Ernesto Petti, who has been highly acclaimed for his Verdian roles.
SYNOPSIS
Set in 11th-century Scotland. Macbeth and Banquo hear a prophecy from witches in the forest that Macbeth will become king but Banquo’s descendants will rule. Spurred on by his ambitious wife, Macbeth stabs and kills the current king. Although he takes the throne just as prophesied, obsessed with the prophecy that Banquo’s descendants will rule, Macbeth then also plots to murder Banquo and his son. Having failed to kill Banquo’s son and driven mad by ghosts of the dead, Macbeth murders the wife and children of Macduff, the King’s Retainer, and grows increasingly tyrannical. Together with the former king’s son, Malcolm, Macduff raises an army against Macbeth and faces off against him in a final battle.
