DETAILS
"L'elisir d'amore" is a masterpiece by Gaetano DONIZETTI, best known for his bel canto operas. It is the story of Nemorino, a youth who hears the story of how a potion made Tristan und Isolde fall in love and sets out to woo Adina, the most beautiful woman in the village. The music itself directly conveys the characters of Nemorino, the lead character, unable to convey his love as he feels it, and of Adina whose heart is in a tumult for love. At every turn we get a real feel for DONIZETTI's skill, such as in the supreme musical moment in the opera when Nemorino sings "Una furtiva lagrima", or in the bright and distinctive Sergeant Belcore, the villain of the piece, or in Dr. Dulcamara's witty personality. The lively voice of the chorus further rouses the mood on stage. This production by Cesare LIEVI (first staged in 2009) saw the appearance of props like a 9-meter-long book and huge letters of the alphabet, and an actual-size small airplane, earning it a reputation for playfulness and on-the-mark psychological portrayals.
The role of Adina is performed by Francesca Pia Vitale, a highly anticipated rising soprano star, and the role of Nemorino by Matteo Desole who earned rave reviews for his soaring voice in our 2022 production of La Traviata. Marco Filippo Romano, who has previously performed superbly in this role as well as in works by Mozart, appears as the potion seller Dulcamara. The role of Belcore, Nemorino's rival in love, is performed by popular Italian baritone singer Simone Alberghini. This production comes to life under the baton of prominent Italian conductor Marco Guidarini.
SYNOPSIS
The village folk gather as Adina, a wealthy young farm owner, reads aloud from a book. The young peasant Nemorino is in love with her. Sergeant Belcore arrives with his regiment and his eye falls on Adina. Adina is indifferent to Nemorino's interest. The quack doctor Dulcamara sells Nemorino a "love potion" and says it will not take effect until the next day; the bottle contains only wine. The Sergeant returns. He has received orders to take his troops to a new location, and so proposes to Adina that they marry before the day is out. Nemorino worries that the elixir will not have time to work, and entreats them to wait one more day. This gets a cursing from Belcore. Adina invites all to a banquet, while Nemorino goes alone to seek the doctor's help.
At a pre-wedding celebration for Adina and the Sergeant. Adina is sad to see that Nemorino is absent. Nemorino has joined Belcore's regiment as a means to earn the money for another bottle of the elixir. Giannetta arrives with news that Nemorino's uncle has died and willed him a fortune. Nemorino himself arrives soon after, and as the young women suddenly shower him with attention, Nemorino believes the elixir is working. Adina tries to win Nemorino back. Seeing this, Nemorino becomes aware of her feelings and sings his famous aria, Una furtiva lagrima. Adina has bought back Nemorino's military contract from Belcore and gives it to him; Nemorino exclaims that if he is not loved, he might as well go off to die as a soldier. The two confess their true feelings for each other. Belcore returns, and lets go of Adina with good grace. As Dulcamara leaves the village, a crowd gathers to give him a rousing farewell.
