DETAILS
The Educational Programme for High School Students started in 1998 and has been held every year, especially to give young people the opportunity to experience world-class opera productions. Performances are presented as a full-length opera with live orchestral music just as same as all the other performances at the New National Theatre Tokyo.
The programme for 2023 is Puccini's masterpiece "La Bohème", which sets in 19th century Paris and depicts the impoverished yet free spirit of young artists with dreams of future success. The stage design is a realistic reproduction of Paris at the time, a major feat by director AGUNI Jun. The psychological characterisations carefully woven throughout each act are deeply evocative. High school students will appreciate this opera depicting the pure love.

SYNOPSIS
The impoverished poet Rodolfo and the painter Marcello share a garret in 1830s Paris. On Christmas Eve, Rodolfo meets his neighbor Mimì and they quickly fall in love. Meanwhile, Marcello and Musetta are reunited after a chance meeting at a cafe, causing the young companions to sing of the magnificence of love.
However, concern over Mimì's illness causes her and Rodolfo to part.
Time passes and Musetta brings a dying Mimì to Rodolfo. As he holds her, Mimi silently breathes her last breath, bringing Rodolfo to bitter tears.
