DETAILS
The Educational Programme for High School Students started in 1998 and has been held every year, in order to give young people the opportunity to experience world-class opera productions. Performances are presented as a full-length opera with live orchestral music just as same as all the other performances at the New National Theatre Tokyo.
In 2027, we will present Giuseppe Verdi's early masterpiece Macbeth , inspired by his deep admiration for Shakespeare. This monumental work marks the dawn of a new era for Verdi, where he ventured into the realm of opera. Aligned with Shakespeare's original play, the score is full of gloom, drama, and thrill. It profoundly portrays the psychological descent of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as they are pushed to the extreme driven by prophecy, ambition, suspicion, conspiracy, and madness. With its powerful choruses and thrilling musical highlights, it is a great opportunity for audience members who are new to opera to appreciate the vigorous nature of opera.

SYNOPSIS
Set in 11th-century Scotland. Macbeth and Banquo hear a prophecy from witches in the forest that Macbeth will become king but Banquo’s descendants will rule. Spurred on by his ambitious wife, Macbeth stabs and kills the current king. Although he takes the throne just as prophesied, obsessed with the prophecy that Banquo’s descendants will rule, Macbeth then also plots to murder Banquo and his son. Having failed to kill Banquo’s son and driven mad by ghosts of the dead, Macbeth murders the wife and children of Macduff, the King’s Retainer, and grows increasingly tyrannical. Together with the former king’s son, Malcolm, Macduff raises an army against Macbeth and faces off against him in a final battle.
