DETAILS
A work from Lynn Nottage, currently the only female two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. Nottage's work Ruined depicts how women subjected to violence during the Congolese civil war maintained their dignity and survived under the harshest of conditions. Featuring characters who cannot be reduced to the dualism of good and evil, this work vibrantly depicts how women survived such impossible circumstances. It has received numerous awards, including both the Pulitzer Prize and the Obie Award. It offers us an opportunity to consider events in a distant land as our own. Rightly described as contemporary, international and critical, this play is finally making its long-awaited Japan premiere.
It is directed by Marie Gonohe, recipient of the 30th Yomiuri Theatre Award Grand Prize for Best Director. Highly praised for her innovative perspectives in works such as Der Besuch der alten Dame, Gonohe brings delicate, intricate directing to this challenging play, while incorporating daring ideas. Open auditions will be held to choose the performers for some roles.
