Nachtland

With the passage of time and changing eras, we aim to create works that are contemporary, international and critical. The first such example that we will perform is Nachtland, a work created by Marius von Mayenburg, a renowned figure in the contemporary German theatre world. First performed in December 2022 at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, this masterful work by the author--well known in Japan for Fireface (Feuergesicht)--brings the delicate and serious topic of Nazi Germany into the everyday life of a modern family. As it weaves together black humour and comical selfishness, this work asks how to face past history, and depicts the deceptions and problems of modern society.

Translated by Shino Nagata, who currently resides in Germany and has translated numerous German works such as the mystery novel Liebes Kind (Dear Child), and directed by Akinori Yaginuma, who delved deeply into the 2025 performance of Yoru no Michizure to treat the work with great care after four years with the Kotsu-Kotsu Project, Nachtland now makes its Japan premiere.
