New National Theatre Tokyo's Opera "Suor Angelica" and "L'Enfant et les Sortilèges" on OperaVision from 15 December 2023
New National Theatre Tokyo (NNTT) is delighted to announce that a double bill of Puccini's Suor Angelica and Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges which was staged as the 2023/2024 season opener will be streamed on OperaVision and NNTT Stream from 15 December, 19:00 CET / 16 December, 3:00 JST.
The stream will be available to watch 6 months with English, French, Italian, German and Japanese subtitles.

Opera "Suor Angelica" / "L'Enfant et les Sortilèges"
Puccini's Suor Angelica is a touching opera in which the loneliness and despair of Angelica, separated from her child, and the miracles are depicted with the richness of Puccini's music. Other highlights include the exquisite ensemble of female soloists and chorus, the breathless dialogue between Angelica and La zia principessa, and the dramatic expression of Angelica's choice to die out of despair.
In contrast, Called a "Lyric Fantasy" by the composer, L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (The Child and the Spells) by Ravel is a fantasy merging elements of both opera and ballet. The story develops from a child's perspective, and can be enjoyed as a fable for children and adults alike. With brilliant music, the trajectory of a child's emotional adventures is playfully described.
The production was directed by Aguni Jun, one of Japan's leading opera director's, renowned for his meticulous reading of the libretto. Please look out for his delicate portrayals of individual characters, spectacular set changes, and playful elements scattered throughout these opera.
Numajiri Ryusuke, one of Japan's foremost opera conductors, conducted the production. The role of Angelica is performed by Chiara Isotton, who specializes in dramatic roles, and the L'Enfant is performed by Chloé Briot, who has sung this role many times to great acclaim, and La zia principessa/Maman is performed by Saito Junko, renowned for her passionate and resolute expression. Bachtrack ★★★☆☆
Soprano Chiara Isotton showed dramatic vocal presence as Angelica in an otherwise rather uniform Japanese cast. Starting out as one of the nuns, she gradually reveals her hidden emotions. In the scene with her aunt, sung by French-based Japanese mezzo-soprano Junko Saito, there was a palpable tension between them, and her despair on learning her son's death was truly heartbreaking.

Para L'enfant et les sortilèges, Aguni creó una puesta en escena llena de fantasía, con la vivacidad de los colores de figurines y elementos escénicos, con bellísimas imágenes en el caso de los animales. Contribuyó al éxito de la producción el amplio uso del ballet, tal y como se concibió originalmente. La coreografía de Noriko Ito, clásica aunque con toques de modernidad, se acopló perfectamente a la belleza de la música. El protagonista fue interpretado por Chloé Briot, una soprano francesa experta en este papel, que le dio vida con gran naturalidad y ágiles movimiento, que supo armonizar con los demás personajes.
