The NNTT became one of Stephen's favourite theatres in which to perform and from 2015 he attempted the feat of taking on the four main tenor parts of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibenlungen (Loge in Das Rheingold, Siegmund in Die Walküre, Siegfried in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung）under the batton of Iimori Taijiro, the artistic director at the time. The strong bond with Iimori Tajiro was also evident in Stephen's interpretation of Florestan (in Fidelio) directed by Katharina Wagner in 2018. In January 2023, he was greeted with enthusiasm for returning to the stage of NNTT's Opera Palace in the title role of Tannhäuser.

While being the world's top star, Stephen Gould was known as a dedicated artist, charming the audience with his innovative interpretations. His sincere personality won him tremendous trust and respect from his colleagues. We had expected him to return to the New National Theatre Tokyo in the near future, so we are particularly saddened that we have been robbed of the chance to hear the wonderful voice of this true star.
