Opera "Boris Godunov"

Trailer of "Boris Godunov"(Nov. 2022)

Boris Godunov is the only opera by Mussorgsky based on the real-life Boris Godunov, a Russian Tsar during the Time of Troubles in the late 16th century. Conceived as a co-production with the Polish National Opera, this new production was directed by Mariusz Treliński, the Artistic Director of the Polish National Opera, and conducted by Ono Kazushi, the Artistic Director of the NNTT. The production focuses on the relationship between Boris and his son Fyodor, and depicts Boris's guilt and conflict.

A strong cast, including Guido Jentjens and Arnold Bezuyen, who excel in characterisation, and rising singers Goderdzi Janelidze and Kudo Kazuma, make for a spectacular performance.

This production combines the 1869 Original Version and the 1872 Revised Version of the opera.

Viewing Period: 24 March 2023, 19:00 CET / 25 March 2023, 3:00 JST - 24 September 2023, 12:00 CET / 19:00 JST
Sung in Russian with English, Russian and Japanese surtitles
Recorded on 17 November 2022
Performed at Opera Palace, New National Theatre, Tokyo

Reviews

Opera Now

The key concept is that the characters of the Holy Fool and Boris's sick son Fyodor are combined to become Boris' accuser. The two are played by the same actor but sung by different singers. This was a little confusing, though it effectively highlighted the opera's underlying theme: the sense of guilt that traumatises Boris and leads to his subsequent self-disintegration. By putting the emphasis on Boris' inner conflict, the production managed to expose Tsarist Russia's weaker, more vulnerable side.

KISHINAMI Yukiko, Opera Now, February 2023

Opera Magazine

Guido Jentjens ...... spent much of the time stumbling around in underwear and a dressing gown, a haggard, haunted figure. ...... Goderdzi Janelidze was in magnificent voice as Pimen, conveying the unmistakable sense of menace the production demanded, and Teppei Kono was a superb Varlaam, memorably singing his song about the Tartars in a brothel, as he examined the available bodies. Other singing roles were in capable hands, but I suspect the performance that will be remembered longest was Justyna Wasilewska's silent performance as the disabled Fyodor (coupled with Eiko Koizumi, who sang the part poignantly).
