English surtitles introduced for the opera "Madama Butterfly" and "Turandot"
We are introducing English surtitles for ALL performances of two Puccini operas performed this summer, "Madama Butterfly" and "Turandot"
Puccini's well-known work "Madama Butterfly" is set in Meiji period Nagasaki and punctuated with vibrant melodies such as the well-known aria "Un bel dì, vedremo". The Japan depicted by Puccini, who had never actually set foot in the country, feels real and we can only marvel at his deep insight and imagination.
The NNTT production directed by KURIYAMA Tamiya casts a sharp eye on the social background of the story, especially Japan's relationship with America at the time. No matter how many times you have seen it, you will find something new in this outstanding production.
The other Puccini's famous opera "Turandot" will come to fruition as part of "Summer Festival Opera 2019-20 Japan ↔ Tokyo ↔ World" project. As the climax of the current season, our Artistic Director of Opera ONO Kazushi will take the baton.
The new production is directed by Alex OLLÉ, Artistic Director of the internationally acclaimed theatrical group La Fura Dels Baus, who has directed several major operas and events, including the opening ceremony of Barcelona Olympics. The production will feature a star-studded international cast and the collective chorus of the New National Theatre Chorus, the Fujiwara Opera Chorus Group and the Biwako Hall Vocal Ensemble.
