Chekhov:
The Work of the Soul
January to July 2002 |
Anton
Chekhov (1860 -1904) was a Russian dramatist and short story writer. His poetic
works, which portray lives of people in great detail and highlight various feelings
from the depths of their minds, are not only frequently staged throughout the
world much like those of Shakespeare, but also have exerted a strong influence
on Japanese contemporary drama from their beginning to the present day. The New
National Theatre, Tokyo (NNTT) will approach several of these works that have
fascinated audiences to the present day from multiple angles, to explore this
work's possibilities in a contemporary perspective. |

Ryo Iwamatsu is called as Japanese Chekhov for his literary
style and he himself deeply admires the Russian dramatist. Taking
a motif from Three Sisters, he has developed bold concepts
to write a new play that challenges Chekhov's characters and dramaturgy.
Tyzenbax, who dies in a duel in Three Sisters, gets brushed
off by his fiance. She then said, "I knew you would be defeated."
He ultimately escapes from the world of Three Sisters in defiance
of his own fate. |

Uncle Vanya depicts people who live their daily
lives despite adverse circumstances and provides deep insight into
the absurdity of the society that they have to cope with. With its
broad views of the world, the play profoundly moves audiences. Uncle
Vanya, together with his niece, Sonya, maintains an estate owned by
an elder professor in the Russian countryside. Yelena, the professor's
young and elegant wife, attracts anyone, then the household's environment
is gradually getting changed. |

The Cherry Orchard is Chekhov's posthumous work
in which he contemplates eternity in the daily lives of people. This
work, which describes collapsing aristocrats and signs that the coming
new era has brought, is popular throughout the world. It is embellished
to stage at the NNTT with its setting laid in late Meiji period (early
1900s).
Madame Ranevskaya, after running through her fortune, returns to the
Cherry Orchard. She steeps herself in her memories; People at the
Mansion warmly welcome her. The vast land, however, destines to be
put up for auction. |
