Like a Seagull, I still come
to this place - allured to the lake.
Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) created his own unique dramatic world
in which he depicted the delicate feelings of human beings and his work
continues to exert a strong influence on contemporary drama. In its "Series/Chekhov:
The Work of the Soul", the New National Theatre, Tokyo will approach
Chekov's plays which continue to fascinate audiences today from various
angles and explore their potential from new perspectives. The NNTT will
present The Seagull, the monumental work that dramatically opened
the way for Chekhov as a dramatist, as the first in this Series.
The Seagull was written when Chekhov was 35 years old. It reflects his view
of life and art, and it is well known as a play that incorporates many of
his own experiences in its episodes.
The setting is the area around a placid lake in Russia. Nina, who is the
daughter of a wealthy landowner and wants to become an actress, appears
in a performance of a play written by her lover, Treplieff, who seeks innovation
in art and aspires to be a writer. Gathered around the stage are such characters
as the actress Arkadina, Treplieff's mother. Also among them is Trigorin,
Arkadina's lover, whom Nina becomes acquainted with. Soon Nina begins to
fall in love with Trigorin, a popular writer, and goes after him to Moscow.
And a period of two years passes ...
The NNTT's forthcoming production will use the translation by Odashima Yushi
of the English version of The Seagull by Michael Frayn, the British
playwright famed for his play Copenhagen, which won various awards
in Western theatrical circles. Dialogue with penetratingly beautiful words
will go straight to the hearts of the audience. The stage director will
be Makino Nozomi, who has an established reputation for his ability to give
profound and refreshing theatrical representation to stories. Attention
has been focused on how the play will be staged and how best to combine
Makino's young and fresh sensibilities with Chekhov's famous work. Expectations
are mounting as a cast of talented actors and actresses capable of portraying
the various lives of the characters has been brought together.
The Seagull will brilliantly adorn the opening of the NNTT's 2002
season, adding a new page to its performance history. |
