This fantastic production created by director Michael Hampe premiered in 1998. Among the works of the NNTT Opera repertory, it has been performed over a longer period than any other save for Aida, our inaugural production. The operas of Mozart are a must for any lineup. We selected this one which was written right at the end of the composer's life. For many children around the world, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) represents their first exposure to opera. In scheduling the production for that time of year just after the new school term starts in Japan, we hoped to give parents and children an opportunity to attend together. One aspect of this particular production that deserves special mention is the ambitiousness of its casting. In our first season under Artistic Director Otaka Tadaaki, Cosi fan tutte was staged as a concert performed entirely by Japanese cover singers. This format was repeated the following year for Don Giovanni. The intent was to give Japanese singers a chance to showcase their talents and give audiences a chance to enjoy these works with their focus squarely on the music. The response to these special productions was enormously positive. Now, for this presentation of The Magic Flute, one of Mozart's most endearing operas, Japanese singers have been cast in all roles. On the podium will be Ralf Weikert, who made his debut at the NNTT when he became a last-minute substitute to conduct the October 2011 production of Salome. Mr. Weikert has drawn accolades for his interpretations of the voluptuous music of Richard Strauss. Combine his seasoned musical sensibilities with the fine ensemble work Japanese singers are known for, and it's only natural that anticipation for this production is high.
