    PERFORMANCES

As Briton David Bintley takes over as artistic director, it seemed only fitting to ring in the holiday season with a production Cinderella by fellow Briton Frederick Asthon. Ashton is one of the greats of 20th century English ballet. The NNTT added The Nutcracker and Cinderella to its repertory for their suitability as year-end productions. This version of Cinderella is filled with love, humor and pathos, and the NNT Ballet is in fact the only ballet company to perform this great ballet in Japan. The work premiered at the NNTT in 1999, and this will be the fifth production here. This holiday season, the NNTT gives the gift of ballet. Cinderella has garnered rave reviews, and is a ballet that the whole family can enjoy.

If this, my first year as Artistic Director, has something of an English accent, that is partly accidental as The National Ballet has a number of ballets already in it's repertoire from my part of the world, and audiences in Tokyo as well as London have long enjoyed Sir Frederick Ashton's 'Cinderella' as part of their Christmas celebrations.
