The operetta, "Die Fledermaus", is the crowning work of the "King of Waltz", Johann STRAUSS II. This supreme piece of musical theatre exhilarates audiences with its beautiful waltzes and polkas, and light, refined satire, and humour. At its denouement it brings together the stage and the audience as one in song, dance, and drama. This work is well known as a staple of year-end/new-year Vienna.
The production is by Heinz ZEDNIK, a famed tenor at the Vienna State Opera. ZEDNIK debuted as a director in 2006 with this opera, produced the Vienna Volksoper's "Die Fledermaus" the following year, and numerous other operas since then. Born in Vienna, his repertoire comprises the four roles in "Die Fledermaus". His stylish, elegant production shows him as fully conversant with both the work and the Viennese spirit. This orthodox production nevertheless makes ample use of delightfully unconventional devices, amply conveying the charms of "Die Fledermaus".
Eisenstein's role is played by Adrian ERÖD, who played the role in the New National Theatre, Tokyo, productions of 2011 and 2015. This prominent Viennese baritone is at his best in this role, playing the comical, exquisitely refined dandy. The Vienna-born veteran conductor, Alfred ESCHWÉ, takes the baton, conducting with wit a musical score that will thrill.
