This play is to be performed at the NNTT in 2016 as one in the trilogy by CHONG Wishing portraying the underside of post-war Japanese history. The first play, Tatoeba Nonisaku Hananoyouni (Like Wild Flowers) depicts the 1950s, at the time of the Korean War; Parmaya Sumire (Sumire's Hair Salon) depicts a Japanese-Korean family caught up in a mining accident at a mining town in Kyushu; and Yakiniku Dragon depicts a Japanese-Korean family in the 1970s, at the time of Expo '70, when the Japanese economy was beginning to blossom. CHONG decided to continue writing "Plays that Record the History" owing to the experience of writing this Trilogy for the NNTT.
Yakiniku Dragon is set in a Korean barbecue restaurant in Japan and depicts the current realities, and the past and future, of Korea by way of a Japanese-Korean family, comically, sorrowfully, painfully, in a play with music. It was staged in 2008 and 2011 in Tokyo, Hyogo, Kitakyushu and Seoul to standing ovations every time, receiving very enthusiastic support. This performance is a new version, with an almost complete change of cast.

Synopsis

The setting is a regional town in the Kansai region in 1970, the year Expo '70 was held. The red lantern of the Korean barbecue restaurant, Yakiniku Dragon, glows tonight as well in this corner of Japan, even here being buoyed up by high economic growth.

The owner, KIM Yong Gil, lost his left arm in the Pacific War, but takes it as a given and lives life as usual. The family is somewhat disparate, comprising two daughters by a previous marriage, a step-child brought by the current wife, Young Soon, and a son born between them. Yakiniku Dragon is lively tonight, with the whole family there and the laughing, joking customers. There are tears, quarrels and laughter, occasioned by the most trifling things.

Yet even at Yakiniku Dragon, the waves of the times come surging in.
