The Cherry Orchard was CHEKHOV's final play. It was first performed at the Moscow Art Theatre, on January 17, 1904. It was the day of CHEKHOV's 44th birthday, and he passed away about half a year later.

The work is regarded today not only as the culmination of CHEKOV's plays, but as occupying a leading place among all plays ancient and modern. In spite of CHEKHOV having taken it to be a comedy, from the outset it was produced as a tragedy, and is famous for the gap in perception of the play between the playwright and the director at its first staging.
The Cherry Orchard was first performed in Japan in 1915, and has seen numerous repeat performances here since then up to the present 21st century, making it one of the most familiar Western plays in Japan. In the NNTT's 2001/2002 season, KURIYAMA Tamiya produced an adaptation of the play, with a Japanese setting, under the title "Chekhov; The Works of the Soul". This time, UYAMA Hitoshi will direct the play true to the original. UYAMA's productions of the Henry Ⅵ Trilogy in 2009, and Richard Ⅲ in 2012, at the Playhouse are engraved in memory for their dynamism. This play minutely portrays the subtleties of human feeling, so expectations are high as to how it will be performed in the confines of The Pit.

Synopsis

Southern Russia, in the cherry orchard on the Ranevskaya estate. On a day in May, before dusk, Mrs. Ranevskava and her party return from a trip to Paris. Her family and servants, and local notables, welcome her home gladly, but her heart is not at rest.

She is worn out from life in Paris, bankrupt, and has just put up the cherry orchard of her forefathers for auction. Yet while lamenting this, Mrs. Ranevskava, who seems to be on a different plane, makes no attempt to stop her spendthrift life of luxury. Then, all of a sudden, news comes to her while at a ball that the cherry orchard has been sold to a bidder she knows very well. Mrs. Ranevskava falls into despair.
