2014/2015 season's Artistic Director, IIMORI Taijiro, has selected Parsifal as the opening opera in his first season as Artistic Director. WAGNER himself wrote the libretto based on an epic poem from the Middle Ages and composed the opera as a 'Festival Play for the Consecration of the Stage.' This masterwork was written for the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in WAGNER's latter years and can be seen as the culmination of WAGNER's art, with a depth that allows a wide range of interpretation. This is the first ever performance of Parsifal by the NNTT.
The production is by Harry KUPFER, a master stage director who was engaged at the Bayreuth Festival from the 1970s through to the 1990s, and many of whose productions have won him lasting renown. The title role will be sung by the internationally acclaimed Heldentenor Christian FRANZ. The cast is the best that could be wished for, including John TOMLINSON as Gurnemanz and Evelyn HERLITZIUS as Kundry. On the conductor's podium will be the new Artistic Director, IIMORI Taijiro.
