Così fan tutte is the third of Mozart's trio of operas for which Lorenzo da Ponte wrote the libretto. The NNTT Opera staged Le Nozze di Figaro in 2010, followed by a new production of Così fan tutte in 2011. Don Giovanni, which precedes Così in order of composition, will be performed here in 2012. This will be a revival of the production of Così fan tutte that premiered here in May 2011. It is the creation of Damiano Michieletto, a young opera director who is in great demand by opera houses around the world. Michieletto's whimsical production was hugely popular and praised for hitting all the right notes. Now, barely two years later, it makes its return to the NNTT. Artistic Director Otaka Tadaaki has indicated that he is not generally a fan of bold new reinterpretations that seem largely intent on creating a stir. But Michieletto's Così is something special, and Mr. Otaka has hailed it as a great production that really works well. With its modern and vividly colorful sets, the opera created a sensation at the time of its premiere, and audiences were enthralled from the moment the curtain rose. Conducting Così fan tutte will be Yves Abel. Mr. Abel did a fantastic job on the podium for the 2011 production of Madama Butterfly, and his interpretation beautifully conveyed the pure highs of love and fits of passion depicted in that opera. The cast will include Miah Persson in the role of Fiordiligi. Ms. Persson, who is also lined up to perform the role in Munich and Vienna, will be known to Japanese audiences for her work as a soloist with the Bach Collegium Japan. Dorabella will be sung by Jennifer Holloway, who gave a boisterous performance as Hansel in a production of Hänsel und Gretel at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2008. Ferrando will be sung by Alexey Kudrya. Mr. Kudrya was the winner of Plácido Domingo's Operalia (The World Opera Competition) in 2009, and made his Metropolitan Opera debut in October 2011. The role of Don Alfonso will be sung by Argentine baritone José Carbó. Otaka Tadaaki selected Mr. Carbó for the role after hearing him sing in Australia. It gives us great pleasure to be able to present such outstanding singers from Japan and abroad, and we will continue in our tradition of bringing you opera performed by top musicians from around the world. With the conductor and cast assembled for this production, this sublime ensemble opera is sure to be a delight for audiences.
