    PERFORMANCES

In NNT Opera productions, cover singers are cast for all the soloist roles. The cover singers prepare for their roles the same way the principal singers do. They are then available as backups, ready to step in should anything happen to one of the principals at any time in rehearsals or for the actual performance. But unless the principal has a problem, the cover singer never makes it to the stage. Artistic Director Otaka Tadaaki feels it is imperative that Japan's opera houses provide opportunities for Japanese singers to further their artistic growth. Some of Japan's finest opera singers serve a vital role as cover singers in NNT Opera productions. To increase awareness of the role of the cover singer, and to give audiences the opportunity to experience the high caliber of Japan's homegrown singers, Mr. Otaka spearheaded a project under which a concert version of Cosi fan tutte will be performed by our cover singers in May 2011. Subtitled "The School for Lovers", this opera is something of a moral tale with the message that those who abandon reason in matters of love and are too freely guided by their passions can wind up getting hurt. In Cosi fan tutte, Mozart created a beautiful ensemble opera which demands that all six soloists be able to perform in ensemble at the same high level. Don't miss this special production led by Otaka Tadaaki, as the NNTT presents a concert version of Cosi fan tutte.
