In contemporary dance, the 2012/2013 season opens with a new work by Moriyama Kaiji. Moriyama's latest piece is themed on the Buddhist monk Kūkai and the view of the universe as expressed in Esoteric Buddhism, which were the focus of a recent exhibit at the Tokyo National Museum on the "three-dimensional Mandala" in Kyoto's Tō-ji Temple.
Moriyama Kaiji served as host for a television program broadcast on NHK's BS Premium channel in 2011. The program, part of a series on the life of Kūkai, focused on the representation of the cosmos depicted in the mandala. Moriyama also unveiled a solo dance piece that was inspired by the illustrations, Mandala of the Two Realms. At the NNTT, he will be performing a solo piece that is an expansion on this earlier work.
In addition to Moriyama's solo dance, the program includes a group dance created on a calligraphy motif, which relates to Kūkai in that he is counted as one of the Sanpitsu or "three brushes", a name which refers to the three greatest calligraphers of the Heian period.

Moriyama Kaiji is an artist with a singular worldview and idiom of expression, which he draws on to create unique performance spaces. With The Universe of Mandara, inspired by Kūkai and the view of the cosmos espoused in Esoteric Buddhism, Moriyama will take the audience on a journey through the universe of the body.
