When this program of two famous one-act plays by Kishida Kunio was first presented at the New National Theatre, Tokyo in 2005, it received critical acclaim for its outstanding direction and the brilliance of the actors in rising to the challenge of performing two different roles, and was acknowledged as demonstrating the raison d’etre of the New National Theatre, Tokyo with its revival of two modern classics in contemporary form. The production was named Best Play in the Yomiuri Theater Awards, with Fukatsu Shigefumi taking Best Director and Nanase Natsumi winning Best Actress and also the Kinokuniya Theater Award for Best Individual Contribution, while Ikeda Tomoyuki was given the Ito Kisaku Award for stage design.
Okujo Teien portrays the drama unfolding from a casual conversation between two old friends who happen to meet in the roof garden of a department store, while Doin Sowa depicts the emotional turmoil experienced by a husband and wife when he is called to duty in the Russo-Japanese War.
The present production is scheduled to go on national tour, with all of the original cast members from the 2005 production reprising their roles in what promises to be an even more refined production.
