This ballet has become a seasonal tradition, performed throughout the world at Christmastime. The fantastic world that unfolds to Tchaikovsky’s score has delighted generations of children and adults alike. It was an early addition to the repertory at the New National Theatre Tokyo, and the two-act version reforemed into since 2005 has won rave reviews. It is a dreamlike performance that even first-time ballet-goers can fully enjoy.

On Christmas Eve, a splendid party was held around a large Christmas tree at Masha’s house. She was very happy to receive a nutcracker doll from her favorite Uncle Drosselmeyer. But the wonderful Christmas day did not end with that gift. Late at night, the nutcracker doll, which fought against an army of mice, transformed itself into a handsome prince and invited Masha to the Land of Sweets…
