The eagerly awaited revival of this critically acclaimed masterpiece, which
took first place among the Special Magazine for Stage Musical's Top Ten
Musicals of 2004 after its Japanese debut in June of that year. Beloved characters
from Grimm's fairy tales-Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and many
more-encounter a variety of challenges, discover new ways of living, and come
together for a stirring finale. This is an entirely new production by Miyamoto
Amon, who won the Matsuyo Akimoto Award of the Asahi Performing Arts Awards (a
first for the producer of a musical) with his original staging of Into the
Woods, featuring a stunning set that fills the stage with a vast forest,
as well a succession of enchanting musical numbers, including the climactic No
One is Alone. This new production, with a powerful cast fully equipped to
deliver the nuances of Sondheim's impressive score, is guaranteed to move and
delight adults and children of all ages.
Synopsis
The characters include Cinderella, her step-mother and step-sisters, Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk) and his mother, Little Red Riding Hood going out to visit her grandmother, and a baker and his wife. A witch, living next door to the bakery, has put a curse on the baker and his wife, so that they are unable to have children. They are told that in order to break the curse, a white cow, a red hood, long golden hair and golden shoes are needed. They gather their resolve and venture into the dark woods. The fact is that if they can get all of these four things together, the witch will become young and beautiful again......
