Cio-Cio-San believes in constant love.
She is proud of herself and takes her own life.
This is one of the most popular operatic works and will move you with its beautiful music.
The New National Theatre, Tokyo annually holds an opera appreciation class to have high school students understand how wonderful opera is. This year’s program is Madama Butterfly, the great work by the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). Set in Nagasaki during the Meiji Era, the opera portrays the tragedy of Cio-Cio-San, who waits for the return of U.S. naval officer Pinkerton. It is one of the most popular operatic works, which everyone should see at least once. The NNTT wishes that people who have never before seen opera will start with this performance. Please take this opportunity to enjoy opera for the first time at a genuine opera theatre.
