Based on Cervantes’s celebrated novel Don Quixote, this ballet was first performed at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow in 1869 with choreography by Marius Petipa. This joyful story takes place in Spain, a country blessed by the southern European sun. Colorfully dressed dancers display high levels of dancing techniques, and many elements of Spanish folk dances, which Petipa loved dearly, are included in his choreography. The ballet Don Quixote is well worth seeing.
The NNTT invited Alexei Fadeyechev, the then Artistic Director of the Bolshoi
Ballet, to produce Don Quixote and premiered this new production
in March 1999. His direction, which was faithful to the spirit of
Petipa’s original choreography and yet placed emphasis on
the ballet’s common touch befitting the present day, was well
received by the audience. Since then, the ballet has spread cheer
throughout the broad Opera House every time there has been a repeat
performance.
This exciting production will return to the Opera House. This year
marks the 400th anniversary of the first publication of Cervantes’s
novel. Audiences are sure to enjoy the development of the witty
and refined story of Don Quixote, which will conclude the
2004/2005 season, a season that has featured a full array of works
choreographed by Petipa.
