Now, here is the question.
Where could the oasis be?
The "Japanese Drama -To the Present Day" series explores the heritage
of Japanese contemporary drama. The first in the series is Pilgrim,
written and directed by Kokami Shoji, whose work will appear at the New
National Theatre, Tokyo when the time of its appearance is ripe. The Dai
San Butai (Third Stage) theatre company led by Kokami was launched with
the production of Asahi no yona Yuhi wo Tsurete (With the Evening
Sun Like the Morning Sun) in 1981, and since then, it has continued to run
ahead of the times and has even been described as a social phenomenon. While
the works he produced during this period sensitively identified the changing
times, they precisely grasped the universality of the feelings and desires
of human beings that manifested themselves in a way that transcends those
times and thus enjoyed enthusiastic support primarily among youth groups.
Pilgrim was performed by the theatre company in 1989. The highly
allegorical story is interspersed in a timely manner with comic scenes that
are satires on society and depicts from a tragic yet comic perspective the
reality that "Utopia will not make human beings happy." People continue
their pilgrimage to seek the ideal world. Does Utopia like the one envisaged
by them exist? What is needed to create an ideal community? In the spatial
axes that cross each other, the cries of people living in the modern society
emerge from the bottom of their hearts. A new 2003 version of the play will
be created for the forthcoming production at the NNTT. A new and colorful
cast of actors and actresses has been brought together, including Ichikawa
Ukon, a kabuki actor who draws public attention as the young leading player
of the Ennosuke group; Tomita Yasuko, a popular talented actress appearing
not only in visual productions but also on stage; Yamamoto Koji, who has
appeared in many high-profile musicals and straight plays; and Takaoka Sosuke,
who has starred in many movies and TV programs that merit attention and
with Pilgrim will make his first appearance on stage. Look forward
to the Pilgrim of the 21st century, which revives 14 years after
its premiere in an age in which the world is undergoing major changes.
Synopsis
Having had his serialized novel discontinued recently, popular writer Roppongi
Saneatsu was persuaded by editor Asagiri Etsuko to write a long adventure
novel and staking all on its success, he started to write. The characters
in the novel, all under the yoke of their respective destinies, overcame
a number of obstacles and continued their journey to their final destination,
the "oasis." When he was called out by a mysterious man in a black
mantle, the last thing Roppongi expected was to be taken into the world
of the novel he was writing... |
