ROMEO&JULIET You will certainly experience the thrill of first love.

The Montagues and the Capulets, two families in Verona of northern Italy, have a hostile relationship each other and have constantly been engaged in bloody conflicts. In the midst of this discord between the two families, Romeo, a Montague, slips into a ball at the house of the Capulets and meets Juliet, daughter of Capulet.

Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, which depicts the pure and intense love of youth, have attracted people for 400 years since it was written. New National Theatre Ballet, Tokyo performs this immortal love story with the prestigious British choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan's version. Interacted with Prokofiev's dynamic and dramatic music, MacMillan's first full-length ballet, Romeo and Juliet (premiére in 1965), thoroughly expresses the essence of the original play, and has been highly criticised as the most prominent version ever produced. The lithe body of Juliet as held in Romeo's arms effectively expresses the joy of love. MacMillan's choreography appeals something to the audiences effectively, highlighting various kinds of human emotions or feelings such as love, joy, hatred, anger and sorrow, and focusing these two young lovers.

Romeo and Juliet is one of the greatest masterpieces of contemporary grand ballet, and can be appropriate for the opening of NNTTB's 2001/2002 season. An attractive cast of principals and soloists approved by the MacMillan Estate - which holds the copyrights of all of MacMillan's works - has been lined up for this performance. It is worth your expecting NNTTB's production of Romeo and Juliet this autumn.

"Romeo & Juliet" is produced in association with Birmingham Royal Ballet. This production was first performed at the Birmingham Hippodrome on 1 June 1992.
