Background
Raymonda, the last great work by Marius Petipa, will be presented as an NNTT original production. Based on the Artistic Director’s own revised choreography, it will be directed by the director herself.
Filled with exotic charm, it is a masterpiece that has many famous scenes, which could be described as a summation of Russian classical ballet as established by Petipa. Artistic Director Maki Asami does not necessarily view Abderkrakhman, who falls in love with Raymonda, as an adversary to her fiancé and wishes to depict the love story as a universal love between a man and a woman that can happen in any age. With this interpretation coupled with fantastic, fairytale-like scenery that she has requested Spinatelli to design, Asami aims for an original staging of Raymonda not found in the previous versions and will pursue themes with which even people today can easily identify with.

Scenery Design by Luisa Spinatelli
Synopsis
The setting is medieval France. Raymonda, niece of a countess, is waiting for the return of her lover Jean de Brienne, who joined the crusade and is away from home. The Saracen knight Abderkrakhman is also fascinated by the beautiful Raymonda. He attempts to possess her but fights a duel with Jean, who has just returned home. Having won the duel, Jean is permitted by the countess to marry Raymonda, and a grand wedding ceremony unites the two lovers.
