バーミンガムロイヤルバレエ公演「アラジン」での小野絢子と福岡雄大
〜 デヴィッド・ビントレーより 〜
小野絢子と福岡雄大が、今回英国を訪れている間、穏やかな天気を期待していたとしたら、２人はとてもがっかりしたことでしょう。というのは、今年の２月、英国はとても寒くひどい雨に見舞われ、２人がバーミンガム・ロイヤルバレエに客演のため滞在していた期間も、ずっとこのような天気が続いたからです。けれども彼らを迎えた、カンパニーのダンサーとスタッフの温かい歓迎には喜んだはずです。みんなこの新国立劇場バレエ団からのゲストを心の底から喜んで迎え、２人から学びたいと思っていました。
最初の約１週間、絢子と雄大は、バレエ・マスターのヴォルフガング・シュトルヴィッツァーとともに、パ・ド・ドゥとソロのリハーサルを行い、それからＢＲＢのメンバー全員での通し稽古を見学していました。カンパニーのダンサー達は、まだこの新しく馴染みのない役どころを模索中でした。
ついに、『アラジン』の舞台稽古に移る前の最後の土曜日に、この日本人の２人が、カンパニーのダンサーとともに、リハーサル・スタジオでの通し稽古を行いました。当然のように緊張していたにもかかわらず、彼らの技術と情熱が輝き、バーミンガム・ロイヤルバレエのダンサー達は、彼らの努力に惜しみない喝采を送りました。私は気にせずに言ってしまいますが、リハーサル・スタジオの前方に座ってリハーサルをしていましたが、彼らのことを誇りに思い、本当に私の目に涙が浮かびました！
絢子と雄大は、舞台でリハーサルを行うまで、さらに１週間以上待たなければなりませんでした。この新しい『アラジン』は、英国の小さい劇場で上演できるよう、多くの装置が新たにデザインしなおされていました。
とうとう彼らの初日が訪れ、絢子がどれだけ緊張していたかを打ち明けてくれた時は、ちょっと驚きました。すでにこの役を踊っている彼らの経験からして、日本人の２人のダンサーは余裕をもって、英国でのデビューを楽しみにしていると思っていたからです。 誰でも、異国の地で、馴染みのない劇場や見知らぬ観客を前にすることに、かなり恐れを感じることだと、私は考えていなかったのです。 絢子と雄大が、『アラジン』で組んだことがなかったことは別として！ それはさておき、私がこの素晴らしい２人のダンサーから予想したとおり、公演は本当に素晴らしいものになりました。たとえ少しばかりの緊張を見抜けたとしても、２日後の２回目の公演は、より力が抜けて自信に満ちたパフォーマンスとなりました。彼らは今、確かにバーミンガムの観客に受け入れられたと感じていると思います！また、日本の慎ましいバレエファンが、「自分たちの」ダンサーをサポートするため、バーミンガムに観に来ていて、凍るような寒さのなか、自国のダンサーにお祝の言葉をかけるため、忠順に楽屋口で待ち受けていたことも、素晴らしい出来事でした。

If Ayako and Yudai had hoped for nice weather during their trip to England, they must have been very disappointed; the country has been experiencing a cold and miserably wet February which persisted throughout their guest period with Birmingham Royal Ballet. They must, however, have been pleased with the warm reception extended to them by the dancers and staff of the Company, who were all genuinely delighted to welcome them and learn from their National Ballet of Japan guests.
For almost a week Ayako and Yudai rehearsed their pas de deux and solo work with ballet master, Wolfgang Stollwitzer, and observed the full calls given to the dancers of the Company, still feeling their way into their new and unfamiliar roles.
At last, on the final Saturday before Aladdin moved to the stage, the Japanese couple were given a full studio rehearsal with the Company and, despite their understandable nervousness, their skill and passion shone through prompting the dancers of Birmingham Royal Ballet to loudly cheer their efforts. I don’t mind saying that as I sat at the front of the studio taking the rehearsal, tears of pride welled up in my own eyes!
Ayako and Yudai then had to wait over a week before their opportunity to rehearse on stage in the new Aladdin presentation, a number of scenes from the ballet having been redesigned to accommodate the smaller British theatres it would be performed in.
When the day of their first performance finally arrived I was a little surprised at quite how nervous Ayako confessed to being. I had assumed that with all their experience in the two roles, the Japanese dancers would be quite relaxed and looking forwards to their British debuts. What I hadn’t reckoned with, was that anyone would feel somewhat fearful in a foreign country, in an unfamiliar theatre and before a strange audience, not to mention that Ayako and Yudai had never actually danced this ballet together before! No matter, the performance was superb, as I have come to expect from these two wonderful dancers, and if I did detect some slight signs of nervousness, their second performance two days later was much more relaxed and confident. They must surely have sensed by now that Birmingham audiences had taken them to their hearts! How wonderful too that a modest following of Japanese ballet fans were there to support ’their’ dancers and dutifully waited in the freezing cold at the stage door to congratulate their countrymen.
Ayako and Yudai made the long trip back to Tokyo the day after their final performance, but not before celebrating (until the early hours!) with the Company. I hope that were as happy and proud of their achievements here in England as I was!
