handbill [Fra Diavolo]The sixteenth in the Pit Opera series, featuring innovative productions of rarely staged operas is a work by the late 19th-century French composer Daniel François Esprit Auber. Set in an inn in southern Italy, it is a comic opera recounting the exploits of the bandit leader Fra Diavolo and his band of bumbling henchmen. First presented in Japan in 1919, it was one of the highlights of the golden age of the Asakusa Opera, and the rendition by popular tenor Taya Rikizo of Fra Diavolo’s theme song became a runaway hit. For the 2007 version of Fra Diavolo the setting has been transposed to a 1960s Japanese hot spring resort
