The Emerald Project, begun with the 2004/2005 season, is intended to create an original repertory for the New National Theatre by inviting contemporary choreographers from Japan and throughout the world to create new narrative ballets. The project was inaugurated with Ishii Jun's Carmen, now followed by Orfeo ed Euridice by the American choreographer Dominic Walsh. Walsh's performances in the dual role of des Grieux and Lescaut in the New National Theatre's production of Manon are still fresh in our memories, but he has now formed his own company and is displaying an impressive talent for original choreography, with commissions from the American Ballet Theater winning him even greater attention. Seeing what he will do with the tragic tale from Greek myth of the master lyre-player Orpheus and his wife Euridice will be one of the more exciting pleasures of this season.
