 MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA

Mimicking the structure of the Aeschylus' Greek tragedy “The Oresteia , ” this monumental work is presented in trilogy format. As a playwright, Eugene O'Neill received national recognition as the principal figure in bringing realism to America's theatrical world. He was able to bring out the “image” of truth in numerous works due to his particularly intense focus that meticulously analyzed human existence. Continuing with the 2000 performance of O'Neill's critically acclaimed autobiography “Long Day's Journey into Night , ” the New National Theatre, Tokyo presents his epic “Mourning Becomes Electra , ” the key work behind his receipt of the Nobel Prize. As with “Long Day's Journey , ” this popular internationally performed play will also be under the solid directing of Kuriyama Tamiya. A family whose destiny will not let them escape their own blood, is lead to self-destruction from their belief in a godless world, even while pleading for God's deliverance from their sins. Their journey is depicted with intensity and grandeur. The way humans ought to be, the harsh exposure of our fragility, the revelation of our universal desires, this play directly affects all those watching. It is a must-see. We hope you look forward to the New National Theatre, Tokyo's most talked about production this fall together with the cast and staff.

Synopsis

Set in New England at the end of the U.S. Civil War, Lavinia Mannon longingly waits for the return from battle of her father, Ezra, and her brother, Orin. However, she senses that her mother, Christine, has fallen in love with Captain Adam Brant and cannot hide her anger at this betrayal of her father. Under Lavinia's severe questioning, their affair is finally exposed. Lavinia declares that if they do not break up, she will bring them to ruin by telling her father. Frightened by her daughter's threat, Christine convinces Adam that they must plan her husband's murder. Ezra comes home at last. Having heard rumor of Adam, Ezra hopes to change he and his wife's previously cold relationship and start over. However, at the end of an argument he collapses from a heart attack, giving Christine the opportunity to use the poison she prepared to kill Ezra.
