THE PETITIONTo complete the series “Scenes of Women and Men” with a bang, the New National Theatre, Tokyo will stage an excellent work written by British playwright Brian Clark. Its premiere was held in the United States in 1986, featuring the distinguished actress Jessica Tandy as the lead actress. In the same year, the National Theatre of Great Britain showed a performance of the play to great acclaim. Based on the author’s appeal that use of nuclear weapons is a deadly crime against humanity and that we all have a duty to make sure no nuclear weapon is ever used again, a conflict between a husband witnessing his wife head towards death, and this same wife, facing death with all dignity, reveals in a turbulent way all the mysteries of the relationship between husband and wife. Within this turbulence the subtleties of the two shine through, with director Kimura Koichi arranging these subtleties for the best expression possible. The energetic and ever-so-human couple will be played by Suzuki Mizuho and Kusabue Mitsuko respectively. The two will act out the very essence of what life and death mean. People often say this is an age that lacks communication. Yet the wife and the husband, close to the end of their lives, have one heated discussion after another, facing each other head-on. This is a play of witty conversation that could only come from the mouths of two people greeting their golden years with vigor.

Synopsis
The scene is a classy residential area next to the Hyde Park, London. Sir Edmund Milne, a retired general of the British Army, and his poorly wife, Lady Elizabeth Milne, are whiling away somewhat boring, yet peaceful days. Then one day, Sir Edmund is shocked to find out that his wife, after more than fifty years of marriage, has signed a newspaper petition to oppose preemptive nuclear strikes. As a retired military serviceman, he is convinced that his duty is to support his nation’s position and thus reprimands what his wife for her actions. Yet Lady Elizabeth counter-argues, saying she has acted out of a solid conviction. The two enter a severe confrontation, and as one discussion leads to another, one secret after another is revealed – the short life remaining for Lady Elizabeth, her past infidelity, …
