The Educational Programme for High School Students started in 1998 and held every year, especially to give young people the opportunity to experience world-class opera productions. Performances are presented as a full-length opera with live orchestral music just as same as all the other performances at the New National Theatre Tokyo.

In 2018, we will present the opera "Tosca", a renowned piece by Giacomo Puccini.

The Italian-style production of Antonello MADAU-DIAZ convey the opera's very essence. "Tosca" has won great popularity among the works that form the repertoire of the New National Theatre, Tokyo, for its grandiose staging and costumes, exuding the air of 19th century Rome, especially in the "Te Deum" which concludes Act 1. The whole work is scattered with popular arias such as Cavaradossi's delightful "Recondita armonia" ("Hidden harmony") at the beginning, Tosca's superb "Vissi d'arte, vissi d'amore" ("I lived for art, I lived for love"), and Cavaradossi's farewell song, "E lucevan le stelle" ("And the stars shone"). The tension-filled depiction of the events of a single day and the entertaining quality of the performance would be a perfect vehicle for students and their first opera experience.
