Invitational Programme for Performing Arts in the Region has been held by the New National Theatre Tokyo since 2005 as a programme to introduce outstanding works produced by theatres outside Tokyo and works from all over Japan are performed in collaboration with the New National Theatre Tokyo. In 2017, the invitation is extended to "The Mikado", staged at the Biwako Hall Center for the Performing Arts, Shiga.
Biwako Hall, opened in 1998, will mark its twentieth year next year, in 2018. Since its opening it has showcased outstanding stage works from Japan and the rest of the world. The Biwako Hall Vocal Ensemble was established as the core of the theatre's creative activities and the Hall presents their own productions including opera.
"The Mikado" is one of the best known works of the famous English comic opera duo, William Schwenck GILBERT (libretto) and Sir Arthur Seymour SULLIVAN (score). It is a work that came out of the Japonisme that was sweeping Europe at the time, and was a huge hit in London at the end of the nineteenth century. This production, by NAKAMURA Keiichi, uses his translation of the libretto. Enjoy this witty, polished work which is said to have given rise to the genre of the London musical.
Prior to its showing at the New National Theatre Tokyo, "The Mikado" will be performed at the Biwako Hall on Saturday, August 5 and Sunday, August 6, 2017.
