The 2017/2018 Season at the New National Theatre, Tokyo, commemorates the twentieth year of the Theatre's founding and opens with Götterdämmerung. This famous work concludes Richard WAGNER's opera tetralogy, "Der Ring des Nibelungen". It makes clear the whole story of this massive music drama, portraying the downfall of the gods, whose ambition to rule the world has met its ruin. This performance brings the "Ring" tetralogy to its conclusion, concluding the new "Ring" cycle at the New National Theatre Tokyo, produced over the past three seasons.

The director, Götz FRIEDRICH, puts his characteristic insight to work, throwing into sharp relief the inner life of the characters that appear, and effortlessly drawing spectators into the drama of the "Ring". The conductor is IIMORI Taijiro, who has been Artistic Director of Opera for the three "Ring" operas to date, and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra makes its first appearance in the orchestra pit of the New National Theatre, Tokyo. Siegfried is played by the world's leading heldentenor, Stephen GOULD, who in this "Ring" series has taken on the immensely challenging task of playing four main tenor roles. Brünnhilde is played by that supreme Wagner soprano, Petra LANG. Gunther is played by Anton KEREMIDTCHEV, who has appeared in numerous Wagner productions throughout Europe. Hagen is played by Albert PESENDORFER, and Waltraute by the extremely popular mezzo-soprano Waltraud MEIER, who makes her first appearance at the New National Theatre, Tokyo.
