The 71st National Arts Festival by Agency for Cultural Affairs presents
2016/2017 Season
Music by Giacomo PUCCINI
Opera in 4 Acts
Sung in Italian with Japanese surtitles
Opera HOUSE
Running time is approx. 2 hours 50 mins including intervals
Composed by Giacomo PUCCINI, this most popular opera portrays the lives of young artists residing in a garret in Paris; it is a beautiful, sad tale that unfolds around four friends - Rodolfo the poet, his seamstress sweetheart Mimi, Marcello the painter and his Musetta.
Directed by AGUNI Jun, one of the features of the production is the stage design, recreating the city of Paris. The psychological depiction of the characters woven throughout each Act is a work of refined accomplishment.
Musical highlights include the arias <Che gelida manina and Sì, mi chiamano Mimi> by Rodolfo and Mimi respectively in the garret scene in Act 1, the aria <Quando me'n vo'> by Musetta in the glamorous Latin Quarter in Act 2 and the climatic aria duet <Sono andati?> by Rodolfo and Mimi back in the garret in Act 4. The melodies in each scene, brimming with emotion, takes you to the romantic world of PUCCINI.
Paolo ARRIVABENI, who has served as the musical director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Belgium since 2008, will make his debut appearance at the New National Theatre, Tokyo as conductor of this production. The cast also includes some New National Theatre, Tokyo debut appearances, namely Aurelia FLORIAN as Mimi and Gianluca TERRANOVA as Rodolfo.
