Parmaya Sumire (Sumire's Hair Salon) forms the last work in CHONG Wishing's Trilogy. It depicts a Japanese-Korean family caught up in a mining accident at a mining town in Kyushu.
Parmaya Sumire (Sumire's Hair Salon) is set in a beauty salon in a Kyushu mining town in the mid-1960s. It shines a light on the lives of a miner, his family, and those involved with them. The story revolves around a former beautician, TAKAYAMA Sumi, a Japanese-Korean whose wishes to open a beauty salon called Sumire's Hair Salon, and her husband, HARIMOTO Seong Hun, who suffers the after-effects of carbon monoxide poisoning from a mine accident.
This is a portrayal of life lived strongly, under adversity, by common people, through laughter, tears and all moods and circumstances.

Synopsis

The setting is Kyushu, in 1965, in a small town by the name of Arirang Pass. It looks over the Ariake Sea. On the edge of the Arirang Pass is a hairdresser's, where former beautician Sumi lives with her family. Sumi's husband Seong Hun was involved in a mining accident which left him with the after-effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. The husband of Sumi's younger sister is also afflicted by the same condition, so Sumi begins a fight to the death to preserve their way of life. However, the mining industry is in steady decline...
