| 1981 | June | The Preparation Council for the Establishment of the Second National Theatre reported to Commissioner for Cultural Affairs the outline for the establishment of the Second National Theatre and its construction scale drawn by the Project Committee. |
| 1986 | May | Mr. YANAGISAWA Takahiko won the Second National Theatre design contest out of 228 candidate files from 23 countries. |
| 1989 | March | Amendment to the Law of the National Theatre designed the National Theatre Special Corporation currently the Japan Arts Council as an independent administration agency, as an installation body of the Second National Theatre ( as tentatively named at that time). |
| 1990 | March | Amendment to the Law of the National Theatre reorganized the National Theatre Special Corporation into the Japan Arts Council as a special corporation. |
| 1992 | February | As an urban planning was announced, Hatsudai and Yodobashi became the special quarter, the comprehensive redevelopment of which enabled neighbouring Tokyo Opera City to take advantage of an unused construction capacity of the Second National Theatre up to the maximum permissible extent and led to the integral cultural zone. |

| 1993 | April | Foundation for the Management of the Second National Theatre was chartered. |
| 1994 | July | The Japan Arts Council as a special corporation entrusted Foundation for the Management of the Second National Theatre to prepare for performances. This entrust continues till today. |
